Assenter | Dissenter™ Coaching Model Explained

One evening, an elderly Cherokee brave told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people.

He said, “My son, the battle is between two ‘wolves’ inside us all. One is evil. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority and ego.

"The other is good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith.”

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather:

“Which wolf wins?”

The old Cherokee simply replied: “The one that you feed.”

This Native American parable is a great reminder that we get to choose the voice to which we will listen, the one that will diminish (The Dissenter) or empower (The Assenter) us.

Here is the key: You need to be intimately familiar with each voice in order to recognize and choose the healthy perspective that serves you and others!

As Henry Ford said, “Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right.” There is an on-going, internal conversation that constantly steers our thoughts and drives behavior. Most executives live in this space, and few pause to ponder the opposing view. Let’s take a deeper look and get to know these two roommates that live in our head.

The Dissenter: This is the voice of self-preservation. Unlike the parable above, we do not view it as evil. It is more a voice of complacency, comfort and fear. It is important to listen to this voice, as it wants to keep you safe yet typically manifests in ways that do not serve your growth.

It says, “I’m not good enough, I can’t, I’ll fail, I’m inadequate, I don’t deserve it, I don’t have time, I’m an imposter, I have to, I should, it’s too hard.”

The Assenter: This is the voice of your highest self. It is the sound of your best friend and champion, your support system. It pushes you because it regards you as highly intelligent, competent and capable. It reminds you of the many hurdles and fears you have overcome in life, and believes you can do anything to which you set your mind.

It says, “I’m worthy, I can, I’ll learn, I deserve it, I have time, I’m capable, why not?, I’m unique, I’m authentic, Yes, and…, I get to, I want, I will."

Both voices will create a particular thought, which leads to actions that create circumstances/outcomes and that possess a level of energetic influence to varying degrees:

Level 1 = “I’m feeling defeated.”
You have given in to the Dissenter. The fear of the unknown or failure has psyched you out.

Level 2 = “I’m not sure.”
At this level, you are a little stuck in the middle. You want to move forward, but the Dissenter has enough momentum to keep you stuck.

Level 3 = “I’ve got this.”
You are so pumped up, you are leaning into the Assenter and overpowering the Dissenter.

Level 4 = “I know you’re there and I’m going to take it from here.”

At the highest level of awareness, you allow your Dissenter "a seat at the table," then make a conscious decision to come from a place of compassion, acceptance, humor, motivation and empowered behavior.

In our "Look Who's Talking" exercise, we become intimately aware of the Assenter and Dissenter narrative.

Our request for you:
Take any challenging situation that has your attention and run it through the exercise.
Next decide: To which voice do you want to listen?

Once you experience the power of the process, feel free to use it with your executive clients and watch them shift!
